About From Waste 2 Profit

Turning waste into raw material

16 tonnes per person. This is the amount of raw materials used annually in Europe. Ten tonnes of this goes into structural items (such as infrastructure, housing, durable goods) and six tonnes leaves the economy as waste.

With our current economic system, this gigantic mountain of waste can only but get bigger. On top of that, many of our resources are being depleted. We really need to change the system and to change it now.

Through the Interreg project From Waste 2 Profit , we’re tackling this problem and encouraging SMEs from the Meuse-Rhine region to engage in waste management. We’re seeking to galvanise them into taking the first step towards sustainability and circularity. After all, waste is often a major cost item, and less waste is good news for companies: reduced costs, new income and a better environmental report.

The project

What is From Waste 2 Profit?

Through the From Waste 2 Profit project, partners step up their waste management at companies in the Maas-Rhine region. For SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises)*, sustainability often appears to be a cumbersome and expensive task. In fact, the opposite is true: a sustainable strategy provides competitive advantages, promotes economic growth and creates new jobs.

*An SME is an independent company with less than 250 employees and annual turnover not exceeding €50 million or a balance sheet total not exceeding €43 million.

Waste management (e.g. in the form of reuse or recycling) is a first step towards sustainability and circularity. By making it a priority, companies will soon notice the benefits.

SMEs face many obstacles along the way. These are often of an organisational, technological or financial nature. From Waste 2 Profit seeks to tackle these problem areas.

So what does this mean in concrete terms?

1

Community

We're establishing a community around waste reduction and valorisation. It's made up of companies seeking to improve their waste management with a view to circularity. We're thus developing a learning network with companies, knowledge institutions and government authorities.

2

Matchmaking

Furthermore, we match suppliers and buyers of 'by-products' and recycled products on a Euregional matchmaking platform.

3

Frontrunners

We create greater awareness about the circular economy. We do this by highlighting best practices of frontrunners in waste management.

4

Waste stream audit

We offer companies an audit of waste streams . We identify exactly how much and what kind of waste they produce. This enables us to spot opportunities to reduce waste or reuse materials. For this audit, a company is entitled to financial support of €2.500 per waste audit, regardless of the value of the audit, which is in any case capped at €5.000.

5

Waste optimisation project

We encourage companies to innovate more effectively. We provide support in business and project development, and financial support for technological solutions and management systems. Here too, companies are entitled to financial support of 50% of the total project cost (capped at €40,000).
